DARPA's Cheetah - The Fastest Robot In The World
The concept of the Cheetah was introduced by DARPA over a year ago, but now we have more than just blueprints. They have now released a video where their speedy creation gets on a treadmill and clocks in at 18miles per hour. That's just the tip of the iceberg because Boston Dynamics are constantly working to improve the robot, hoping that it can one day run as fast as its flesh and bone counterpart, which is around 70mph.
Boston Dynamics seem to be well on their way to achieving that goal, as the movement patterns of the robot are very reminiscent of the fluid movement of an actual cheetah. The stride, the flexing, un-flexing and the movement of the spine are every bit as fluid and dynamic as the infamous predator. Even though the military potential in this kind of technology is obvious, it is not yet clear how the Cheetahs will be used for defense purposes. Their development is now close to the field test stage, as Boston Dynamics expects to send the Cheetah on its first free run later this year.
